Hi Doug!
Perhaps this is a little late ... but welcome to Metamorpha! As you've no doubt seen already, these guys have put a lot of thought and effort in creating this site.
I read this entry a couple times and have a few thoughts for you - thoughts from a pastor/church planter's perspective (at least this pastor/church planter's perspective!).
You made a statement about no one in your church having heard about 'spiritual formation.' Actually, this seems to be quite common ... at least for now. For a long time the term 'spiritual formation' seemed relegated to those in either the Catholic or monastic tradition - but that is changing as believers from all traditions and denominations are becoming dissatisfied with 'church as usual' and are hungering after an authentic, life-altering experience in God ... not just a one time 'encounter', but a continual, progressive movement of the Holy Spirit as he transforms us into the image of Christ. So don't be discouraged! Be happy that God has led you to this path.
As for pastors slowing down enough to listen ... well ... (I was about to say 'Good luck!' ... oops! I did!) ... all I can really advise is that you pray for your pastors and teachers and ask God to get their attention (to give them 'ears that hear' what the Spirit is whispering to the Church) and create such a hunger in them for themselves and the congregations they serve that they are willing to lay down that which has proven fruitless and be willing to think and do differently. Doug, you don't have to wait for a pastor to lead the way - it would be nice if they did, but it is not necessary. Your duty is to follow the leading of the Spirit.
As for your 'third difficulty' ... BEEN THERE! It's perfectly natural to try to get as much info as possible and try to gain insight from the experiences and understandings of others...yet it can be overwhelming, too. I think you are right on point in asking God to help you focus on one or two things at a time. Remember the parable of the sower that Kyle referenced early in his book. These 'seeds' of spiritual formation need time to grow. Rest assured that as you cultivate the soil of your heart that the Holy Spirit will direct you in regards to formation, the disciplines, etc. - that's what it's all about! Keep an eye out for what he is 'growing' in you, and seeks his power and direction to enable you to cooperate with what he has chosen for you at this time (ie 'walk in the Spirit').
By the way ... you're probably further along in transformation than you realize. :)
Just a few thoughts ...
God bless you, Doug.
Pastor Nar, thank you for the reply. I really liked your suggestion to "keep an eye out for what is growing in you". Being reflective/contemplative is something new but I am finding that it is a peaceful place when I get there. I am sure that is where I will "see what is growing".
It is a real blessing to be able to share this journey knowing that this is a work of God without boundaries and we can meet without a schedule or concern for time and distance.
May God bless His work through you.
Doug
