Spiritual formation for ordinary people?
 (United States)
I see that a lot of posters are academics and pastors. It is nice to read these posts but I am just an ordinary person--a mom who also has a full-time job. My time is full of busy-ness. Any thoughts on how ordinary people in the rat race can pursue spiritual formation when they hardly even have time to breathe? Thanks!

Hi ordinary person!

I am one of those too; a full-time student, part-time worker (during my free time),and actively pursuing a relationship with Jesus. This website just launched last week I believe, so fortunately I think there are more of us out there! I wonder what you mean by 'pursuing spiritual formation.' Are you a Christian and because of the busy-ness you have no time for the spiritual formation's practicums ( lectio divina, spiritual disciplines, etc.)? Or something else?

I am no spiritual director by degree, but I do know Jesus as my passionate friend, psychotherapist, father and intuitive healer. So from one ordinary person to another, id say ask the holy spirit to give you insight into your busy-ness. Ask the Lord where he is present with you in your every day life with job, kids, and the like. Maybe post your experience on this website or ask for a spiritual director to help you out? ( that is, if you get a free moment soon).  I hope that can be of some help! May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Re: Spiritual formation for ordinary people?

Hello back! And thank you for this kind reply. You said, Ask the Lord where He is present to you...Yes, I am actively doing that and seeing results! :) Certainly I need Him to even get through the day. I am learning the Jesus Prayer and this certainly calms my most frantic moments...and I do lectio divina (in fact, was doing it before I knew it actually had a name!) so maybe I am "doing it"--that is, spiritual formation--but I just don't want it to become legalistic, like "doing a quiet time," etc. I think what is being aimed at here is more than that, right? Sometimes I think I receive mixed messages--spiritual formation as an action versus spiritual formation as a lifestyle, attitude, "being," or whatever. I am so afraid of being confronted by someone who well-meaningly says, "Well, are you doing spiritual formation?" like I used to be asked in college, "Well, are you doing your quiet time?" like NOT doing it was a severe failing in the Lord's sight...I guess I am rambling here. My sincere desire is to be in the Lord's presence, period. Again, thanks for your thoughts!

Amen to all the things that the Lord has already shown you and the work he is doing in your very soul!

I can empathize with you about fearing that spiritual formation will become another legalistic lifestyle. But, if anyone ever asked you " are you doing your spiritual formation?" they would have to know what spiritual formation is, and if they know what it is, chances are they would not ask such a question. If they do, then they've definitely missed the point of it! I know what it is like to believe that not doing something spiritual was failing in the Lord's sight. But we are not failing. You are a child of God and he has given you his spirit to lead you into all truth. All that spiritual formation would do is to remind you of how much you already are in the Lord's presence, and from that, transformation of the heart takes place. Amen!

I really appreciate this conversation.  So many good questions and responses.  I am one of those academic practitioners you speak of.  And yes, we (metamorpha) are expecting more people who are not academics and pastors to emerge soon.  While I am a practicing spiritual director, I am still just a regular sometimes too busy, somtimes lazy, sometimes  anxious, sometimes insightful person.  so i say to apilgrim, we are probably more a like than you might think.  I think melrod might be able to vouch for me on that one.  thanks so much for your post.  it is for people like you that prayers are spoken by many of the people associated with this website.  blessings on apilgrim and melrod, in the most excellent way, julie
