Hearing God
 (United States)

How do I know when God is speaking to me? I feel like I cant hear anything, even though I know he's there. Am I trying too hard?

Don't be sad, MXPX 187.  I remember when I tried very hard to hear God's voice.  God says in the scriptures My sheep hear my voice and follow me.... It doesnt say my lambs hear my voice... You are young in the Lord and you will hear His voice...be assured.... In the meantime start reading His word and see what stands out to you as to what God wants you to see...Ask him questions like what is it you want me to get out of this particular verse...see what happens...Just like young Samuel in the Old Testament had to be trained to understand when God is speaking to him...so you too must be trained to hear His voice. it takes time and effort but you will hear His voice...Be encouraged!!!  In His Love and Care,  Commoner

Hi mxpx187,

I can hear a lot of frustration behind your question. It sounds like it feels like God is being very quiet if not silent with you. I am wondering if you have been able to talk to God about the experience you are having with him. Have you expressed your distress? What kinds of things do you say to God in this time? What have you been hoping to experience of God that has left you feeling this way? I am sure there is much back story to your question and I think hearing more of that may allow us to help you more.

Re: Hearing God

I understand how you feel. I worry frequently about whether what I describe or hope to be God's voice is rather just my own ideals or even the influences of other things in my life. In the same way when someone comes up to me and says, "I spoke to God and I feel He's telling me..." or "God spoke to my life in this way..." I can't help but wonder, How do you know? Is it possible that you're just making it up or convincing yourself that it is something it's not?

I didn't mean to have that sound cynical. I just want to be sure. I'm a person that's often ran by my emotions and I have come to fully understand how fickle and misleading emotions can be so I'm trying to keep a rational head and not jump to conclusions. It's rather depressing sometimes, like I'm missing something important.

I appreciate all the advice and concern. I know that He is listening to me, but I want to hear His voice. I have told Him my frustrations and how I long to hear His voice. I tell Him my feelings and concerns about the day and how I am happy to finally start a relationship with Him. I thank Him for His goodness and love for me. Im not expecting some grand thing with a blinding light in my bedroom and a booming voice. I just want to hear Him talk to me.
